The inside insulation : we laid wood fibre boards (15 cm) and a top layer of OSB boards to create a new floor that we can walk on. Besides that we installed very well insulating pinewood windows and flexible joints in the doors. Statistically seen 30 % of the energy is going through the roof, 20-25% through walls and 15 % through windows. The rest is loss by ventilation. |
Windows play an important role in preventing heat loss in houses. Since there are still no good suppliers of high-efficiency insulating windows in the south of France we bought ours from the firm Stock Fensterbau in Angersbach in Germany.Loft insulation and new flooring 
We carried out the loft insulation ourselves. This is the most cost efficient way of insulating your home. Instead of putting the insulation on the floor as in our case, you can also put it in between the beams. Then you also need a special wind protection paper or film. In order to use the loft as a storage room, it is recommended to use special wooden planks with groove and tongue. Avoid ventitation losses
Modern renovations create tight air systems. This is why you should open doors or windows now and then although this subsequently also leads to energy losses. A controlled atmosphere with a ventilation system is just in special cases really needed.

The pine-frame windows have a K value of 1.1. We fetched the windows and brought them home in France in a Sprinter van. We then installed them ourselves.
